Golden Slipper

Held in Sydney at the Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, the Golden Slipper is an exhilarating sprint race. The Golden Slipper race is run on Saturday, March the 18th every year. Open to two-year-olds, with a set weight handicap, the Golden Slipper has 3.5 million in winnings up for grabs, which is why it’s known as the richest two-year-old thoroughbred race in the world. The race is run over 1200 metres and attracts the finest thoroughbred racers from Australia and New Zealand.

There are thousands of racegoers that head to the Golden Slipper every year and it’s a glamorous day of fashion and racing. Many of the jockeys, trainers and horses that are involved in this event also take part in the Melbourne Cup or the Cox Plate. The race is getting bigger every year because of the calibre of horses running in the field and has distinguished itself as one of the top racing events in Australia.

This premiere racing event is hosted by the Australian Turf Club along with four other events on the day which are the Ranvet Stakes and The Galaxy, as well as the George Ryder Stakes and the Rosehill Guineas. Positions in the field for the Golden Slipper are difficult to secure, with so many horses nominated to run in this prestigious race.

With so much money at stake, the barrier draw receives intensive scrutiny from punters, the media and the racing community. Although there is heated debate over where horses are placed in the barrier draw, many believe that it can make or break a horse’s chances of success in this fast-paced sprint race. If history is to be taken into account there have been barriers that have had more wins.

Because the horses in this event are quite young and often not exposed to the spectacle of the Golden Slipper, what happens in the barriers is often unpredictable. This also makes it a thrilling race to watch and one which attracts large crowds, especially with such high stakes available.

What many people don’t know about the Golden Slipper is the first winner of the race in 1957 was sired by Star Kingdom and was a colt called Todman. The next four winners of the Golden Slipper also had Star Kingdom as their sire.

Golden Slipper Field and Odds

With such a rich prize pool to be won, there are up to 2000 nominations to get a place in the field for the Golden Slipper. As the race is a set weight handicap, all the horses are given the same opportunity to secure the title, but with only 16 places in the field getting through can be difficult. The Rosehill Gardens Racecourse is located 23 kilometres from Sydney CBD in the Western Suburbs. It is operated and maintained by the Australian Turf Club, who are also involved in the balloting system.

While some horses have to go through a balloting system to ensure a place in the Golden Slipper field, others are given automatic entry based on their success in the feature races leading up to the race. To gain automatic entry into the Golden Slipper, horses have to win either the Sweet Embrace Stakes, the Skyline or Riesling Stakes, the Pago Pago Stakes or the Magic Night Stakes.

The competition is fierce in the lead-up to the Golden Slipper with so many vying to get their horse’s automatic entry. With limited places available after the automatic entries, the horses go through a ballot whereupon their winnings, form, titles and placements are compared and those with the highest are offered a place in the field. There are also two horses that are emergencies on standby for the race in case something goes wrong closer to the race or on the day.
