Golden Slipper

Whether you are a regular and eager punter, or simply enjoy an occasional bet when the big racing occasions come around, you’ll want to know all about the Golden Slipper Stakes. So, here are some of the key facts about this terrific race.

It has an unmatched position as the richest of the world’s races for two-year-old thoroughbreds. Of course, this also ensures that it’s our own premier such occasion in the racing calendar. With a prize fund, for the 2017 running, of a superb three and a half million dollars, it’s no wonder so many owners are chasing after the big bucks on offer; and punters eagerly look out for the best Golden Slipper odds and Golden Slipper tips.

The race is in the control of the Australian Turf Club and is positioned as a Group 1 Thoroughbred 1200m race at set weight conditions. It is the centrepiece of a great autumn Saturday’s racing and entertainment at the excellent Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, situated in western Sydney. This course that hosts the Golden Slipper field so well, and offers so much more, is now over 130 years old. It was brought to life by John Bennett and cost £12,000 to complete, back in the mid-1880s.

This Saturday is designated their Golden Slipper Day, and the superb sweeping course and wonderful flower border fringes play host to much entertainment, as well as four great Group 1 races. If you know that this quartet is comprised of the Rosehill Guineas, the George Ryder Stakes, the Ranvet Stakes, and The Galaxy, then you’ve shown yourself to be a keen racing fan! If so, you’ll probably also be aware that the first winner, six decades ago, was the magnificent Todman; the latest, in spring 2017, was She Will Reign. Asked to provide a list of other great names etched in the history of the Golden Slipper Stakes, you would surely include Sky High, Sebring, Miss Finland, and Rory’s Jester among so many memorable champions.

In the lead up to the event, the barrier draw will take place. This seems to pray on the mind of so many, including owners of the sixteen horses entered into the Golden Slipper field, plus their trainers, jockeys – and many of Australia’s huge battalion of passionate punters. It’s always been open to debate as to whether this draw makes any substantial difference to a race itself. The winner has to come from somewhere, although it is fair to say that each horse has its own racing style. This means that some draws may be better for a particular horse, but ground conditions and other factors will also be part of any equation. As the old saying goes ‘you pays your money and you makes your choice’. One point worth knowing, though, is that entries from in and around Sydney have historically dominated the winner’s list. This doesn’t stop entries from interstate from trying to buck that trend.

So, as you spend as much time as you want in studying the Golden Slipper form guides, tips offered and odds available, you will still appreciate that this is a fairly unpredictable event, being for those young two-year-olds, still so early in their racing career.

Golden Slipper Field and Odds

There are certain iconic races spread across the Australian racing calendar. One of these is certainly the Golden Slipper Stakes, a 1200 metre dash for two-year-old thoroughbreds that was first held exactly sixty years ago, when that initial running saw Todman finish victorious, one of his many wins that year.

Such is its status that it now stands proud as our own premier such event, and is also the world’s most valuable race in that age group, and the prize fund is now a massive $3.5 million. At a swift 1200 metres or six furlongs, if you prefer the old terms, it’s no wonder it attracts the attention of so many turf aficionados.

The race is scheduled for an autumn Saturday afternoon, as part of Golden Slipper Day. The venue is the Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, with a sweeping track and notable for superbly tended flower borders. During the event, spectators can also enjoy four other Grade 1 races being run, as well as all the excellent facilities of this quality location.

Gaining entry into the Golden Slipper field

If you were the owner of a 2-year-old thoroughbred, you’d surely want it to race for this prestigious title, and the terrific prize pot. Entry to the chosen field of just sixteen, with a pair of emergencies as well, has to be earned in one of two different ways. The first route is through your horse winning one of seven highly contested races earlier in the season. Immediate entry into the Golden Slipper field goes to the first placed in each of the Reisling Stakes, the Silver Slipper Stakes, the Magic Night Stakes, the Skyline Stakes, the Sweet Embrace Stakes, the Pago Pago Stakes and finally the Todman Stakes. This last race, as many fans will know, bears the name of the first winner, the mighty chestnut triumphing exactly sixty years ago in 1957.

Once those places have been decided, the remaining entries are assessed on the levels of prize money each has gained during this early part of their track career. A field of sixteen is thus assembled, and it’s time for the bookmakers and punters to get to work on the odds, tips and bets to place.

Betting on the Golden Slipper Stakes

Regular gamblers will know that this can often be an unpredictable race, not surprisingly so considering the youth of the runners, and the fact that their careers haven’t yet fully developed. However, keen punters will still be keen to gain all the knowledge of form they can, and then to spend some time assessing where best to bet. Others may just have a fancy, or a tip from a friend, and be keen to wager on that horse. Either way, this is where the excellent Golden Slipper odds comparison tool we provide has been proven to deliver great access to any value that is to be found with the online bookmakers.

Then, it’s up to the sixteen entrants to provide more of those magic Golden Slipper moments.
